Focus on Atlantic City International Airport
In 2006, the Atlantic City International Airport achieved connectivity to a wide range of cities – for both the business and leisure traveler – with the addition of Delta Airlines daily nonstop service to and from Atlanta. Further, a spike in passenger traffic once Spirit Airlines completed its fleet changeover at the end of 2006 suggests that utilization trends at the airport will continue on the upswing– thus increasingly the likelihood that other airlines will bring service to the airport.
In addition, as Atlantic City casinos continue to increase the number of hotel rooms available to out-of-town overnight guests, experts predict that the city will gradually attract large conventions and more out-of-state travelers who will demand non-stop air service to their favorite gaming destination.
The airport helps shape the trajectory of the local economy through air service but also through the judicious use of the Authority’s extensive land holdings around the airport. In fall 2006, the Authority sought proposals from developers on the highest and best use of a 13.9-acre tract of land abutting the airport circle bounded by Delilah Road, Tilton Road and the airport circle. Among the uses proposed by the Authority were the construction of a hotel and conference center, restaurants and retail space.
